Edition #5
This week's featured analysis challenges the belief that travelers choose OTAs primarily for cheaper rates, revealing instead that convenience and trust drive OTA success—much like the Amazon shopping experience. Former Googler Anne-Laure Le Cunff's new book "Tiny Experiments" offers fresh perspectives on work-life balance for busy hospitality professionals. Don't miss Xotels' 14 essential revenue strategies and Cloudbeds' important podcast on the growing talent gap in our industry.

"OTA bookers are a psychologically distinct traveler segment, agnostic to hotel brands and more associated to the OTA brand. They prioritize convenience, validated by the OTA brand and the end-to-end channel experience. The perceived convenience is backed by brand loyalty, affinity and trust, so they can book confidently in a time and trouble saving way, even when they're not familiar with the hotel brands."
— Chris Zhao @ Travel Media Group
Chris Zhao's refreshing take on the OTA vs. direct booking debate cuts through industry myths that hotel professionals need to hear. He boldly challenges the conventional wisdom that price drives OTA bookings, instead framing OTAs as powerful branded channels where convenience trumps cost. Zhao reveals that OTA users represent a psychologically distinct traveler segment—similar to loyal Amazon shoppers—who value the familiar, trusted booking experience over potential savings elsewhere. For hoteliers struggling with distribution strategy, his positive-sum perspective offers a strategic shift: both direct and OTA bookings can grow simultaneously as the travel market expands.
Zhao, a consultant at Travel Media Group, is a must-follow on LinkedIn for hoteliers seeking fresh, actionable insights on navigating the complex relationship between OTAs and direct bookings.

"Without a solid revenue management strategy, a hotel will just get lost in the pile of other hotels – being unable to reach satisfactory visibility and level of business to remain open. Opportunities are abundant – but trying to find the right distribution mix and deciding which opportunities to target is where hoteliers get lost in the giant maze of channels available."
— Patrick Landman @ Xotels
Xotels is back with another article with 14 essential revenue management strategies for today's competitive hotel landscape. Beyond traditional approaches, these strategies emphasize direct booking optimization, data-driven decision making, and strategic inventory controls. You wake up, go through your morning routine on autopilot, and head to work – where you excel at your job. Your colleagues praise your productivity and reliability.
Yet when you return home, a strange paralysis sets in. The thought of cooking a proper meal feels overwhelming, so you order takeout again. Your running shoes gather dust in the corner as you sink into the couch, mindlessly scrolling through social media until bedtime. Weekend plans with friends get canceled because you "need to recharge."
Months pass this way, and despite your professional success, your personal life has become stagnant. This is a functional freeze – a state where you're performing well in your duties but are unable to invest energy in your own growth.
Fortunately, this doesn't have to be permanent. With awareness, self-compassion, and deliberate action, you can thaw the freeze and rediscover a sense of aliveness in all areas of your life.
— Anne-Laure Le Cunff
Le Cunff is an ex-Googler who went back to school to receive a degree in neuroscience. She runs the popular and very insightful Ness Labs newsletter where she writes about productivity and creativity. The quote is from one of her latest newsletters about breaking through those blocks at home that prevent you from accomplishing anything. It's a position I have found myself in, putting so much energy into being productive and managing the stresses at work, that when I am done for the day, I feel really done. She also released a new book, Tiny Experiments: How to Live Freely in a Goal-Obsessed World, which has been inspiring some personal changes for myself. I thought it would be worth sharing for anyone else who, like myself, is interested in being productive while maintaining a solid work/life balance.

Podcast/Video Worth Looking At
The latest episode of Cloudbed's Turndown podcast features a discussion between Sebastien Leitner of Cloudbeds and Lori Kiel, of Pyramid Global Hospitality. The primary discussion is around the talent gap occurring in the hospitality industry as younger people are choosing other professions despite being trained for the hotel industry. A worthwhile listen about a problem that will need resolving in the near future.
